Like the finish product! but I'm not sure how I'd do it if I didn't have access to stumps and a good saw!

Tree trimming can be wonderfully fun and very productive at the same time.

When trees are dormant is the best time of year to prune them. Therefore, generally speaking, winter would be the ideal season. The risk of disease and pest infestations in the open cut wounds is reduced when branches are removed during dormancy. Pruning before spring also encourages strong, healthy new growth. It is preferable to wait till the harshest winter weather has gone in tough climates like mine here in Minnesota. Therefore, for us, late winter or early spring is the optimal period. A tree can be trimmed at any time during the winter when it is dormant in milder climes. You may still remove damaged or dead branches at any time of the year, so don't panic.

This is a wonderful idea for a community gathering. An Outdoor Holiday Tree Trimming Party with ornament-making, a holiday story, and festive treats sounds like a delightful way to celebrate.
