Our Sunday School program for this school year began in September with 2 new teachers. Lori Burch and Heather Young retired last May after teaching our Sunday School program for the past 14 years. Claire Turner and Brianna Young have taken over as teachers and are doing a wonderful job! At our Welcome Back Sunday in September, Claire and Brianna were commissioned as Sunday School teachers and our students participated in a "Blessing of the Backpacks" to remind them that God is with them wherever they go. Sunday School continues to meet twice a month, usually on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month, at 10:00 AM during the regular worship service. Our students rejoin their families in church during the Passing of the Peace. During the announcements time in the service, the children share their learning and their completed projects with the congregation.

We are thrilled to once again be able to hold Sunday School without restrictions in the 2022-2023 School Year! Sunday School is held during the first part of the worship service on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month at 10:00 AM. We welcome students from PreK through Grade 6. Sunday School meets September through May. Our curriculum focuses on what it means to be a child of God, how we worship and why, how we live our faith in the world around us and follows the seasons of the church year. The shut-downs associated with the COVID-19 pandemic also shut down our Sunday School last winter and spring. We were still able to get together safely outdoors in June to plant our sunflowers around the church property.
In the fall of 2020 we began holding Sunday School once a month, in-person for our "Littles" in October and November, and online via ZOOM for our "Middles," "Youth" and Confirmands. Our curriculum this year is focused on The Beatitudes. During Advent 2020 our shut-down status once again made in-person Sunday School impossible so a full curriculum of Advent lessons and materials were sent home for our students to do with their families. At the current time we are once again shut-down for any in-person gatherings. Our Sunday School continues via ZOOM on the 2nd Sunday of the month for our "Littles" and on the 3rd Sunday of the month for our "Middles" and "Youth." We have met online with our students who will be confirmed this year and will begin formal confirmation classes with them later in the spring, with confirmation scheduled to take place in June 2021. We are hoping to be able to once again meet for Sunday School in-person on a weekly basis sometime in 2021. Sunday School was held for ALL students this week.
This Week in Sunday School - Theme for the Littles - Jesus Grows Up Theme for the Middles and Youth - Fruit of the Spirit - Faithfulness - Part 2 Littles - Today we read the story of the only story in the bible of Jesus as a young boy (Luke 2:41-52). He and his family make their yearly pilgrimage to Jerusalem at Passover time, and are returning home when Mary and Joseph discover that Jesus is not with them. They search frantically for him for 3 days. Finally they go to the Temple in Jerusalem, where they find him talking with the teachers. Jesus is amazed that his parents did not know that he would be “in my Father’s house.” We discussed this as the beginning of Jesus realizing that he had important work to do when he grew up. Craft/Activity - We had a maze worksheet and also made a growth chart. Middles and Youth - We continued with the second part of our lessons on the Fruit of the Spirit, Faithfulness. Last time we met we identified some synonyms for faithfulness - to be true, trust, steadfast, loyal, always there, belief. Herod has heard him called, “The King of the Jews” and sees him as a threat to his rule. The angel advises Joseph to gather Mary and the baby and to escape into Egypt. Joseph does so, and they stay there in hiding until after the death of Herod. Craft/Activity - We had a maze worksheet, a coloring sheet, and a small coloring booklet, all illustrating today’s story. This Week in Sunday School - Theme for the Littles - The Star of Bethlehem Theme for the Middles and Youth - Acting on Love Littles - Today we read A Star for Jesus, by Crystal Bowman. The book begins by reminding us that God made the stars and put them up high to shine down on earth from up in the sky. It goes on to talk about how long ago God made a special star, the “star of Bethlehem.” He put it in the sky to send a message, that Jesus our Savior had come. Shepherds and the Wise Men, and others, followed that star to find Jesus. Craft/Activity - We made scratch art star magnets. Middles and Youth - First we practiced our poems and songs for the presentation we will be doing at the Christmas Eve service. We will have one more rehearsal next Sunday, 12/22, immediately after the worship service. Then we finished our discussions on the topic of LOVE. As Bishop Singh reminded us in his sermon a couple of weeks ago, God loves us just the way we are. We don’t have to do anything to earn God’s love. However, there is also an expectation that we will ACT on that love, spread that love in the world around us. We talked about ways we do that. Upcoming Schedule Dec. 22 - Littles will come downstairs. Middles and Youth will stay upstairs. REHEARSAL in the Church after the Service Dec. 24 - Christmas Eve - Festive Christmas Eve Service in the evening with our Christmas Presentation during the service. Along the way, Little Cub learns about God’s special gifts in the world all around us and discovers that Jesus is the best present of all. Craft/Activity - We made a nativity sun catcher.
